Essential Oils for Animals

We are pleased to be able to carry a line of essential oils that have been created and sourced by veterinarian Dr. Melissa Shelton. Pet safety is of upmost importance when using alternative therapies. Therapies used on people are not always safe for our furry friends. These oils are brought in from the USA, where they are made by Dr Shelton herself. Dr Shelton is an internationally recognized holistic veterinarian, who specializes in using medical grade essential oils for complete and natural care of all animals. She had to make sure that the essential oils would also be safe for use in animal homes. for more information on Dr Shelton visit www.oilyvet.com If you are interested in any of the oils you see on the Animaleo.info website, please let us know as we do carry stock of the more common ones. If there is a specific oil or blend you would like, we place orders every few months.
AnimaleEO Safety
All of the oils have been sourced individually and are medical grade. They are pre-screened for use in animals, and have been USED with animals prior to them ever entering the market. Many times - even before, during, and after blood work and laboratory tests have been collected and evaluated on various animal species using the specific oils as well. Dr Shelton only recommends the use of "medical grade essential oils" for use with animals (or humans for that matter). The use of essential oils that have not been evaluated and proven safe for use in animals, is not recommended, and may prove dangerous for your animals.
Application via Petting
This very simple method of applying essential oils to animals can be used with either neat or diluted essential oils. The method called Petting, involves applying the essential oil single or blend to your hands. Your hands are then rubbed together, and a varying amount of essential oil is allowed to remain on your palms. This amount may vary from completely absorbed for a smaller animals (for say Gerbils) to an obvious coating of oil spread out over your hands. Your hands are then used to pet the animal in question. This technique can be used "all over" the body, or concentrate on specific locations - such as the knee of a dog.
Water Based Diffusion
With water-based diffusion, water is added to a machine along with varying numbers of drops of essential oil(s). It is generally recommended to NOT diffuse essential oils that contain a carrier oil within the diffuser, as the "fatty" oil can ruin the delicate parts and mechanisms of the diffuser. The beauty of water-based diffusion is the variable diffusion concentrations that can be achieved. The teeniest dip of a toothpick, one drop of essential oil, or even 20 drops of essential oil can be added to a batch of water in a diffuser; allowing the utmost control in levels of exposure. Although hardly necessary - one drop or less can be added to a diffuser. When starting to diffuse for an animal - start with a light amount, start diffusing in an open area, and stay with the animal for the first five to ten minutes or more of the diffusion.

Essential Oils and Cats
Cats present their own unique controversies and requirements to essential oil use. Cats are likely a little proud of the fact that they are indeed, the most contested topic in the world of essential oil use. What she recommends when considering essential oil use for cats is to choose oils that are used often, have been used in many cats, and to use them with techniques that cats enjoy. AnimalEO calms any concerns as they only select oils to use with cats, that have been used long term, with good veterinary safety data. Cats are notoriously deficient in the Cytochrome p450 liver metabolism pathway. This particular pathway is utilized for the metabolism and excretion of all sorts of chemicals from their body, including traditional medications. A cat's liver just does not metabolize items in the same manner or efficiency as a large dog or a human. For cats, KittyBoost is recommended and is applied topically to the cat, along with regular water-based diffusion in the household. Any blend intended for diffusion can be selected and rotated through depending on the likes or needs of the household.
Litteroma
Litteroma is possibly one of the easiest methods in which to expose cats to the health benefits of essential oils. It not only replaces the toxic fragrances found in commercial kitty litter, but offers a way to provide preventive and continued health benefits from essential oils on a regular basis. Start with unscented kitty litter - staying within the same brand that you currently use is often advisable. Add 1-3 drops of your chosen animalEO essential oil single or blend to 1 cup of baking soda - store this mixture within a glass jar, and allow it to "marinade" and blend overnight, shaking the mixture several times. Later, you may find you can add more essential oil drops to this recipe. Starting with a small portion - sprinkle the baking soda mixture onto your kitty litter. Mix well. Provide a separate litter box that does not contain essential oils, to make sure that your cat does not have an aversion to the essential oil that was selected. Once you are sure your cat is using the litter box with your oil selection and concentration, you can then omit the use of the "plain" litter box.
